Understanding the concept of topological spaces via open and closed sets

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss topological spaces abstractly as a construction of a collection of open sets and their complements the closed sets. To do this, we present Euler's formula for polyhedra as the driver of our realization of the generality of topology and spaces that should be deemed topological. Finally, we highlight some applications of this abstract definition in other areas of mathematics.
